The Myth About Blogging

If blogging is so easy, then everyone would be making a living from it. When I started blogging about six years ago I had no clue what I was doing. I didn’t really know anyone and there were no post to help me. Today blogging has become so much bigger and to see this makes me happy. But I’m not really hear to talk about the positive things that come with blogging. I see so many people on social media believing blogging is just a way to make money, but they have no idea this is far from the truth.

Don’t get me wrong you can make money, but it won’t get you the million dollar house you’ve been looking for. But if you tell someone who doesn’t understand, they will say you’re a liar. What a lot of people fail to realize is that, there is a whole process that goes into blogging. Whether blogging is a hobby or a full/ part-time job it’s difficult. I find it insulting sometimes when non bloggers go on a rant, saying blogging is not hard work and all you do is get free stuff from it. When I first started blogging, it was not as popular as it is today. It was almost taboo and no one talked about it as much. Bloggers are underrated and underestimated. You would never truly understand what it is like, until you experience the struggles and obstacles.

This isn’t a post complaining about being a blogger. I’m just writing about what blogging is like from my point of view and how I feel people who don’t blog react. So here’s a few  things I’ve heard people say or what they might be thinking about bloggers.

“They’re making so much money from blogging”
“I want free stuff too”
“Blogging is not a real job”
“Blogging is easy”
“They all have mac books and special equipment”
“They are living in a fantasy world”

Blogging is what you make it to be which is fun. This is hard work, but it’s very rewarding in the end. If people are fortunate to have the latest camera equipment or great background that’s awesome. But not everyone has that and it’s ok. You don’t need a special camera for your photos, you can use your phone. You don’t need to have an out of this world background, make your own or buy one at an affordable price.

If you’re not a blogger you wouldn’t understand what goes behind the scenes. It’s not all rainbows, unicorns, running barefoot in the grass. You couldn’t be more far from the truth. As bloggers we do everything ourselves unless we’re luck enough to have help. Writing, taking photos, editing, promoting multiple times a day and more is all on us. There’s so much that goes into one single post. Bloggers could write two to three posts and realize none of them is good enough to be posted. How about taking hundreds of photos everyday to only realize a good ten will make the cut. Trying to promote blog posts without spamming everyone’s timeline/ feed. I could ramble on and on about this, but I would be here all day long. Blogging is not easy, we do it because we enjoy it.

Just know that if money is being made, it’s because we all earned it. We work hard on everything and its not for free. It’s not easy being a blogger and all of times, not everyone is fortunate enough to make money from it. Before you bash someone who blogs, try to think about all of the hard work and effort they put into the post, photos and more.

Thank you for reading my post! Is there anything that bothers you about the misconception of blogging?

  1. From where I'm coming telling them I was a blogger was difficult because they'd start expecting money like Im now some Nigerian scam princess

  2. I never realized how much time blogging could take! I totally appreciate the work that goes into preparing one blog post and posting accordingly with social media. and YES, we earned it!!

  3. I wish people understood that it's not as simple as just starting up and making money. What isn't mentioned online is the unrealistic posts that detail how much someone makes in a month. 9 times out of 10, those people they had successful blogs in the past that they worked for years to build. When they put out an income report that says they made a ton of money in their 3rd month and others compare themselves to this standard, it can be disheartening.
